The pick for a downtown job: buy on the I-65 side of Franklin and keep the bus as a backup. Distances on this page are ranges from travel sources, not a map survey.
Driving I-65 from Franklin
I-65 runs through the eastern part of Franklin, with the Cool Springs Boulevard interchange at the center of the office district. For a downtown job it's the default route, so the miles you drive before reaching it are the variable you can control when you buy.
WeGo Express Route 91X to Nashville
WeGo's Route 91X, the Franklin/Brentwood Express, is the only scheduled bus between Franklin and Nashville. It runs as a commuter coach and was extended in 2022 to serve the Vanderbilt campus as well as downtown. Seats are first come, first served and standing isn't allowed, so VUMC tells its riders to have a backup plan if a bus is full.
No commuter train to Franklin
There's no passenger rail from Franklin. WeGo's only regional train, the WeGo Star, runs east from Lebanon through Mt. Juliet, Hermitage and Donelson to Riverfront Station downtown. If a rail commute matters to you, that's a Wilson County search.
Commute routes from Franklin into Nashville by road
Three roads lead north out of the city toward Nashville.
I-65 north from Cool Springs
From east Franklin and Cool Springs you're on the interstate almost immediately. That's the case for starting a downtown-commute search in Census ZIP 37067, which takes in the Cool Springs Galleria area. Zillow's typical value there is $941,539, about $40,000 above 37064, and that premium is what the shorter on-ramp costs you.
Franklin Road (US-31) through Brentwood
US-31 runs north from Franklin through Brentwood as Franklin Road, parallel to I-65. It's the surface-street fallback when the interstate backs up, with traffic lights the whole way. It also passes Maryland Farms, the Brentwood office park, if your job is there rather than downtown.
Hillsboro Road (US-431) toward Green Hills
From west Franklin, US-431 (Hillsboro Road in Franklin) heads north toward Green Hills and the Vanderbilt side of Nashville without touching I-65. It's two lanes for long stretches. If you're shopping Zillow's West Harpeth or McLemore areas ($984,295 and $1,415,604), drive this road and the I-65 option at rush hour and compare.
Bus and park-and-ride commute options in Franklin
Transit works if you keep standard office hours at a stop the express bus serves. Otherwise treat it as a backup on the days you don't want to drive.
WeGo Express 91X fares and passes
VUMC lists the regular express fare at $3.50 per one-way ride. Its staff, students and volunteers can buy a 20-ride pass for $47 instead of $70, which works out to $2.35 a trip. Over a working year of about 240 days, two rides a day at the full fare comes to roughly $1,680, against about $1,128 on the VUMC pass. Check current times on WeGo's Express schedules before you plan around them.
Cool Springs Park and Ride at 730 Cool Springs Boulevard
WeGo lists a Cool Springs Park and Ride at 730 Cool Springs Boulevard in Franklin, used for its game-day service, and says park-and-ride parking is free. Confirm with WeGo that it's a 91X stop for your trip before you count on it.
Franklin Transit and TODD on-demand rides
Inside the city, Franklin Transit runs fixed routes plus TODD (Transit On Demand), a curb-to-curb service six days a week within Franklin. It doesn't run to Nashville. Check franklintransit.org for current fares.
Franklin to Nashville International Airport (BNA)
Visit Franklin puts the airport about 24 miles from downtown Franklin; other sources range from 17 to 25 miles depending on where you start. The trip means the full I-65 run north and then across Nashville, with no bus option that skips a transfer.
BNA trips for Franklin business travelers
If you fly every week for work, the airport trip deserves the same test as the office commute. Homes in north and east Franklin, closest to I-65, shorten it most.

Commute test checklist for a Franklin home

- Note how many miles you spend on surface roads before I-65. That's the part a different Franklin address can change.
- If you'll use the 91X, check the Express timetable on WeGo's site and find the nearest stop and park-and-ride.
- Price the gap: a cheaper home farther out against the extra miles and time, using the table above.
